It warms you up, it is deliciously spicy, and it does the housework for you.
Well maybe it doesn’t do the housework but when there is mulled wine around to be enjoyed I do find that you care less about the state of the house. This is one of my favourite things about winter, it’s the key to surviving it. It is also the perfect way to rid yourself of a dud bottle of wine. I love warm spicy drinks, I’m absolutely obsessed with them. Chai tea, mulled wine, and my neighbour Sherri’s fantastic egg nog (when I can get it) all of them are brilliant.
So get on board, go get the ingredients and get stuck in. If its cold where you are, you need this.
- 660 ml of pear cider
- 750 ml of red wine (I like to use pinot noir)
- 1/3 cup of caster sugar
- 6 cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 3 star anise
- 1 vanilla bean with the seeds scraped out
- 1/2 an orange sliced thinly
- 1 apple sliced thinly (granny smith or pink lady are good)
- (optional) fresh piece of ginger
Add all the ingredients (except the apples) into a large saucepan and cook whilst stirring for 5 minutes to dissolve the sugar. Then add the apple and cook for another 5 minutes.
Grab your best mates, then 'voila' - commence drinking
Make sure to use appropriate heatproof mugs/glasses. Don't try and put this in a wine glass, it may shatter. Then you'll have wasted some, and you'll have sad face 🙁
