I’m not a smoothie girl. I’m not. Or so I thought. I’ve always felt like I need something substantial in the mornings but I had been getting bored of my usual fare. I was also looking to try and get a little healthier and thought I’d start looking at other brekkie options. Clean eating was plastered over every website, book or magazine I looked at of late, so who was I to not get on this clean eating bandwagon and start searching for some smoothie recipes to replace my morning weet bix. I did not think that I would meet the breakfast love of my life along the way.
I started my search looking for green smoothies and I have to admit, the thought of starting my days with a combination of kale, cucumbers and celery was not getting my tastebuds excited, no matter how many promises of mint and coconut water there were in these recipes. So I ventured to my fruitier friends, given that my tastebud preference has always swayed more to the sweet than the savoury.
Then I found “the one”. The smoothie that changed my life. Some of my favourite ingredients all in one glass. Cherries, dates, banana, almond butter, cinnamon and almond milk. Blend. Serve. Repeat every day. Sometimes twice a day if you feel the need. Not only is the flavour combination perfection (who doesn’t love the cherry and almond combo), it keeps you full for hours. No looking for a bickie at 10am, because I have:
a) satisfied my breakfast hunger pangs
b) satisfied my sweet tooth cravings
It really doesn’t get much better than this.
Sounds like a sweet breakfast to have for breakfast every day and not overly healthy, but let me just say that I have been having this every day for over a year and have managed to lose 15kgs in that time. It feeds my need for sugar and therefore stops me from snacking on biscuits, chocolates, etc throughout the day and, because the sugar is natural, my body processes it as it should. The protein in the almond butter also keeps me full for a long time. Much longer than weet bix ever did.
Give it a go. Just once. I guarantee, it’ll change your life. It changed mine. You could even say I’m now a smoothie girl.
- 1/2 cup frozen cherries (pitted)
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 2 dates (pitted)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tbs almond butter
- 3/4 cup almond milk
Blend all ingredients in a blender to a smooth consistency. Pour into a glass and serve immediately.
